Avast was originally an acronym for Anti-Virus Advanced Set. Pavel Baudiš, a scientist at the Institute for Mathematical Machines in Prague, discovered Viennavirus in 1988 and wrote a program that could remove the virus. With his colleague Eduard Kučera, he founded the Alwil Software Cooperative and converted it into a partnership in 1991. Avira

Avira is a German company in the IT security industry. With its virus scanners, it had around 240 million users worldwide in 2014. H+BEDV Datentechnik was founded in 1986 by Tjark Auerbach and a colleague, with H+B standing for the first names of the wives (Hannelore and Betty) of the two founders. The main purpose of the company was initially to import special software from the USA to Germany. It later switched to computer security. In 2020, the US company NortonLifeLock announced that it would acquire Avira from Investcorp for $360 million.
